(Biography)

I am Associate Professor at Oberlin College. Since 2006, I have published essays, articles and reviews in The Washington Post, Salon, Mother Jones, Dwell, The Believer, O, The Oprah Magazine, The American Prospect, Wired.com, Barnes and Noble Review, The Oxford American, Gourmet.com, Agni, The Chronicle of Higher Education, TheRumpus.net, Culture11, Readymade, Kiwi, Tikkun, History Channel Magazine, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and numerous other publications. I have relished the range of audiences and expectations these different markets demand. I have been writing a weekly literary column for GOOD magazine for two years as well.

My book, A Skeptic’s Guide To Writers Homes, will be published in October by the University of Pennsylvania Press, as a trade title. A work of narrative non-fiction, the book blends travel writing with literary history and criticism. I have taught courses at Oberlin on Narrative Non-Fiction, Writing About The Arts, The Essay and other topics.

I have received national attention for my writing that has led to numerous media appearances. I have been quoted in the New York Times, Newsweek, U.S.A. Today, St. Petersburg Times, and other print sources. I have been a guest on NPR's Morning Edition, the CBC, APR and numerous other radio programs. My columns for GOOD and other articles have been linked to by The New York Times, Bookforum, msn.com and many other websites. My article, "Handwriting Is History," was chosen for "Best Technology Writing 2010."
